The Conference Releases 2023 National Board Exam Content Outline

The International Conference of Funeral Service Examining Boards is pleased to release the 2023 content outline for the National Board Examination.  The Conference periodically surveys licensed practitioners on the jobs/tasks required in funeral service.  Their responses are reviewed by a committee of licensees and become the basis for future National Board Exams.  This step in the examination development process is integral to the validity of licensure exams by making sure they continue to be relevant to the job duties of funeral directors and embalmers nationwide. The changes from the previous Content Outline are as follows:

1. Content redundancies were removed and language was strengthened for clarity. 
2. No new tasks were added.
3. Tasks were removed as follows:

               Funeral Service Marketing/Merchandising

                    Interpret demographic data for target markets

                    Identify media resources for marketing purposes

               Funeral Service Counseling

                    Display and distribute grief literature

                    Maintain and promote a list of community grief resources

                    Participate in community education programs on death, dying, grief, and mourning

4. Two domains were renamed.

               Cemetery/Crematory Operations is now Cemetery/Crematory/Other Dispositions

               Preparation for Disposition is now Other Preparation of the Deceased
